I go to the dr. on Tuesday and I'm going to ask the doctor to confirm but...I want to perm my hair my hair is naturally straight and I can't do anything with it...it is so thin it won't stay in a pony tail!! I want to put a perm on it to give it some curls and body (i've had perms before) also I have 3 kids (and another on the way) and I don't have time to do my hair everyday!! I need something easy.
I am 6 weeks pregnant I was wanting to know if you think this would be ok or not?
Oooh, I wouldn't do anything unless your doctor says it is OK. I am 7 weeks and just asked the doctor about coloring my hair and she said not until after the first trimester is over. Apparently there is a possibility that the chemicals in hair dyes and I'm sure the chemicals in perms can cause "potential" harm.
I know how you feel, I want to have it done, but I really think it is worth me suffering for 5 or 6 more weeks knowing that I am preventing something that could potentially be harmful.
I just like to stay on the safe side :) It may not be harmful at all, but it is always best to be safe!
Lots of Luck!

Some say its ok some say its not ok. Just wait and see what your doctor said. But you've waited this long... what's another 9 months? A pony tail isn't hard to do.

I don't think that you will have a problem with relaxing your hair. Since your hair has nothing to do with your pregnancy, and it in no way will affect the health of your unborn baby, I dont' see any problem with you changing it :)

I learned this what ever you do. your baby fells it and has it. and if anything y do it? your baby life is first then the rest.don't take risks if you don't have to.

Dr.Spock.com has this to say about it:
"Coloring and perming your hair
If you routinely color or perm your hair, you may find yourself wondering if it is safe now that you are pregnant. Unfortunately, this isn't an easy question to answer. Both processes involve putting chemicals on your hair that are applied directly to your scalp. Small amounts of the chemicals do get into your bloodstream. In animal studies, hair chemicals have been linked to birth defects, but they appear to happen only with a significantly larger exposure than you get with routine hair treatment. Most research, albeit limited, does show that it is safe to color and perm your hair while pregnant. Based on common sense, however, doctors often suggest waiting until after the first trimester, since this is the time when your baby's development is most influenced by outside factors."
And it goes on to say that the major problem with perming your hair while pregnant is that pregnancy hormones effect the way the chemicals act on your hair -- any chemical treatment may turn out quite differently than you wanted!
Personally, I wouldn't go with a perm while pregnant -- maybe a cute short bob? Best of luck.

It should stay in a pony tail, maybe you just need a better type of hairband?
imo, better to be safe and wait, than sorry later, even if dr says so, nothing is certain in todays world.. There is controversy about whether teflon is safe - yet your dr would prolly say sure. There are plenty of things that we are told is safe, only to have other studies in the future prove otherwise..
But then, I hate hair in my face too, and am really happy my hairbands work well. need to be tighter, but an extra twist seems too work.
Good luck! =)

I'm 18 wks pregnant and in the middle of a bad perm grow out. There really isn't much out there to support not getting your hair permed, but it isn't positive that it is safe either. Its going to be your choice. I would say it is best to wait until you are past 12 weeks pregnant and the critical period for organ development. Then if you feel comfortable getting a perm try and see if they have perms that are lower in chemicals. Good Luck!
