How does pregnancy affect the mother when she has Alopecia Areata?

I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata about a year and a half ago. It is mostly under control. I regrew all the hair after my first episode. I didn't have another episode until a few months ago and it happened after a very stressful event in my family. The hair is now regrowing again. I've only had two episodes. I have two kids ages 12 and 7. I am thinking about having another child and wonder if my Alopecia Areata will be worse, the same or completely unaffected by pregnancy?

How does pregnancy affect the mother when she has Alopecia Areata?

I have had alopecia for 23 years (i am now 28 years old), in all its forms, but have leveled out at alopecia totalis for the last 15 years or so of it. (just loss of hair on scalp)

While i was pregnant with my twins (who have no sign of alopecia) my condition did not change, but *after* i had them, with hormones and body trying to regulate themselves to pre-pregnancy levels, for the first time since i was in 4th grade, I lost my eyelashes and eyebrows. (i'd forgotten how different my face looked without them!)

I hadn't gone to the doctor for my alopecia since i was in gradeschool, but decided to go this time. He gave me prednisone (sp?) a type of steriod commonly used to treat alopecia and I hated it.

The eyelashes and eyebrows grew back within a couple weeks. I think they would have done so with or without the sterioid.

So to make a long, rambling story short...there were some short term effects, but everything went back to normal (normal for me, anyway) after a couple weeks. I think is just took some time for my body to adjust to not being pregnant anymore.

Everyone reacts differently to different things, and alopecia is a completely unpredictable disease. It may not change at all, or may even get better. This was just my experience.

Should I be concerned?

My son has some strange habits! The weirdest one? He likes to try to EAT my hair! When we are playing, or whenever he can get his hands on it (not hard, my hair is very long), he puts it in his mouth and tries to chew on it! And if he doesn't get the end, he bites at the back of my head to get at the hair! Also, I know toddlers like to put things in their mouth, but my son also likes to bite mine or my husband's hands and arms, and sometimes he will lick my arm and has even tried to suck on it before! He did the same thing to my face, he was giving me a bedtime kiss on the cheek and sucked on my cheekbone! I was like what in the world, and he started laughing, thought it was hilarious! The last thing is he intentionally bumps his head on things! I'm so worried he'll actually hurt himself! Are these things normal? I've asked some of my friends if their kids ever did it, and they haven't had these issues.. opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Should I be concerned?

These habits are not that out of the ordinary. Most of them are kind of a game to him plus he is also using it as a way to show affection. I have seen a lot of kids try to eat hair and bang their heads on things. When my two year old daughter gets worked up playing she will head but me and even slaps her own face. The only thing I would try to curtail would be the biting. Ever time he tries it, stop look him in the eye and sternly tell him "We don't bite." And depending on his age (if he is over 2) tell him that biting will land him in naughty time. It you properly address the biting these other actions will slow down as well.

As for the head banging, I seriously doubt he will do it hard enough to cause any permant damage. Eventually he will give himself some minor pain or a bruise or two and figure out on his own not to do it. If you react in a panic every time he does it he is realizing he is getting extra attention with it. I would ignore it or casually tell him that he is going to hurt himself if he keeps doing it. But act relatively unconcerned.

Should I be concerned?

I have two children and I did not have these problems with either of them. If you really are concerned, ask his pediatrician.

Should I be concerned?

well i dont know about the eating of the hair, but of course kids like to put everything in their mouths,,but my son is 14 mos and loves to bang his head on the wall, i think he likes the sound. all i can do is make him stop, because he doesnt understand that it could be harmful..check with the dr.

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

I am a single mom of 2 kids (7years old and 4 3/4 month old). I am nurising and my bra is always popping open or I am opening up to nurse. The baby is awake more than my daughter was, so I am busier. Than the dog, and my daughter and the house needs to be clean cause I'm picky... I am happy. I adore my kids... but I am busy and my family doesn't help. I am NOT complaining, I am trying to explain how I feel totally non-sexy. I am busy and I do my makeup sometimes still, but even when I don't... guys still stare at me or are noticilbely not noticing me so I guess I am still pretty. But I don't feel it. My hair is not parted anymore. I dress casual. I don't know when I will ever find time for a sex again as I dont' have a man. I live in an isolated place, so I dont' dress up alot... I dont' know. I feel shabby! Just PLAIN. Is this normal after having a baby? I am not depressed, I am just plain. Milk machine, strech marks, extra wieght and to busy to feel sexy.

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

find a SIMPLE routine for yourself in the morning and at night. I would wash up, brush teeth, and moisturize before I passed out in bed. And each morning I would shower (got up before the baby if I had to) and get a little fixed up.....nothing extravagent. Just foundation, a tad of eyeliner in the outer corners only, and one coat of mascara. I did that every day so I felt really good. I would pull the front of my hair back rather than put it in a frumpy bun (which I felt like doing)I wore things I was comfortable in....cute stretchy pants that were slighly more stylish that sweats. T-shirts with favorite bands on them. I kept clean and dressed okay. Not dressed up at ALL, but in clothes I was not embarassed to be in.

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

I was shabby and sloppy before I got my wife pregnant ... no reason to change now .....

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

yes this is def. normal. it sounds like you need to have some alone time once in a while even though thats so diff. now that we have kids.. good luck!!

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

This too shall pass!! You will get your mojo back - give yourself time. Sexy is not hair and makeup - it starts in the brain, how you feel about yourself. Add the other stuff - the hair and makeup and clothes, when you can. But don't stress over it. We can not all be the mom who ran marathon 9 months after the baby was born! However - you do need to take time for yourself once in awhile, or you are going to burn out. Especially being a single mom. Take time to breathe. You can do this.

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

your last line just about sums it up for me too...

I just had my baby 11 days ago, and even though I know it is still early, I feel just that way. I have 2 other kids too ages 7 %26amp; 9 and I think that they explode when they come home from school. I have to clean up after them and every hour have to get the boobs out for another feeding... Mommy its what's for dinner... I barly have time to take a shower now. And then I look at my husband lying on the couch or sound asleep next to me at 4 am when I'm up AGAIN... I just want to hit him or yell can't you do something... I LOVE my kids soooo much , but I would love to be able to curl my hair again, or wear a size 10 again... So I think you are absolutly normal...

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

Yoa, hold on now. Lets take a deep breath, walk to a mirror and tell yourselve that you are beautiful. And then, sit down and MAKE a way for you to get back to your old self. Deep down in, lies that beauty of a women thats once was. You might be suffering from post pardom depression. Which is common amongst mothers who have just had a child. Which is treatable with doctors supervision. But I feel you dont need a doctor. Try and get a grandparent to watch the kids for a day or two. Call some friends and go have a little fun. But from here on out, you are to start changing yourself right now. What got you here, wont get you there. You make the choice, and your inner self will make the change. start telling yourself every day these things. make time to make yourself feel women again. Go out and buy some weights and start doing little workouts at home while your 4 month old sleeps or is in her play pin. This only takes thirty minutes a day. Go walking with her. Im hoping that your 7 year old goes to school. So you know that you have time. Its getting off your butt and doing. Forget about sex. When you start feeling good inside, then the outside will do the rest. There is nothing wrong with PLAIN. Like I sayed, start right now telling yourself that you are beautiful. Every morning that you get up, have goals set for yourself. And go get them. Aim high girl. And you better let me know how its going.

Have fun.

Normal to feel shabby and sloppy when you have a baby?

oh i know how you feel... before i got pregnant.. i wore make- up all the time.. my hair was always done ... clothes matched and ironed... i look great for the world... after my daughter.. i could care less about make-up .. i wear sweat pants... lucky if my socks match.. LOL... i am a stay at home mom.. so no one but the hubbie sees how i look.. but sometimes i pass myself in the mirror and am like holy crud what have i become!!!!! my daughter is now 14 months and i have gotten better.. i dont wear as much make up cause i am at home. but when we got out even with my daughter i try and look nice... things get better...

you need to ask you family for help.. and it seems like you need some one to talk to other then little people... is there anyone who you can talk to?

Listen kid.. Try this

Cut a piece of onion and leamon. Make a juice of it andapply it to ur hair, with a tooth brush. Keep it for 1 hour. Then wash it off with a dandruff shampoo, head and shoulder is good. Do this two times keepin 1 day in between, I m 90% sure u will not have any dandruff..

There is another way, the most effective way. Cut all ur hair( bald). Then use shampoo 3 times a week. 100% sure it will work..

But if u want to use technology to get rid of the dandruff, there is shampoo called T-GEL. Use as directed. It worked for my frnd, should work for u too.

The best thing you can do is visit your GP (Doctor). He/she will advice you on what to use.

Hey man....You might think of shaving your head. If that isn't an option, don't wait for two days to wash your hair. Use Head and Shoulders every morning. That will cover you while you are at school. Also use Dove conditioner. It is so freaking cheap (for the quality you will get). Everday my friend.....Everyday.

Hello, I found a list of good dandruff shampoos online. You might want to go to a doctor to see if you have possible dermatitis/eczema since none of your listed shampoos worked. Anyhow, I hope this helps! Good luck :)

By the way, Selsun Blue does WONDERS for dandruff!

There is a product called Vosene here in the UK that is good.

I would cut your hair really short and rinse thotoughly with fresh clean water and lots of it, mthis cleared the problem for me.

If the problem then persists you may have a scalp problem that a doctor could reccommend a cure for.

i think it is just a rinsing problem especially with long hair.

Good luck

The best way is to basically scrub your hair while washing. Not a little soft scrub but a rather firm and sturdy scrub. And make sure you are using a good amount of shampoo.

Brad Pitt...?

Leaves his wife for a younger, sluttier type. Inherits kids, adopts more. Has one of his own, gives it stupid name. Dyes hair peroxide blond. Buys a motorcycle and takes up moto cross. Has tattoo done.

Is this the mother of all mid life crises or what???

Brad Pitt...?

You're so right!

It's nothing else than a mid life crisis. In a few years time he will want to go back to Jen, regret his daughter has such a stupid name, regret doing this tatoo (before he wouldn never do it, I guess). Must be Angelina's influence.

Brad Pitt...?

Hey I did all those things! Is that what's happening to me?

Brad Pitt...?

never really thought about it that way! Great question though LOL and most probably true yehh

Brad Pitt...?

hahaha haven't thought about it like that before but I think you could be onto something!

Brad Pitt...?

envy is an admission of inferiority

Brad Pitt...?

No, it sounds like someone who knows how to care, be responsible, and have fun...........

Brad Pitt...?

Um ya no ****...and not to mention how many ****** kids do they plan on adopting ???????? its so ****** stupid i dont care how much money you got ....there is no way you can give that many kids the love and attention they all need..SORRY NOPE dont believe it...

Brad Pitt...?

i think so and poor jen

Brad Pitt...?

Yes, but you would though wouldn't you, I mean if you had to pick a man to do it with, life or death situation, you would pick Bradd Pitt. Or Johnny Depp, certainly not you wife's dad though, that's just plain wrong.

Brad Pitt...?

but he is minted... he can do what the hell he wants!

Brad Pitt...?

He is definitely still in the closet, along with George Clooney. They are partners don't ya know. Biggest untold truth.

Brad Pitt...?

I think he閳ユ獨 閳ユ笀ay閳?and confused about it. Give him a break, he閳ユ獨 just trying to figure out a way to break the news to every girl who is in love with him.

Brad Pitt...?

He's an idiot.

Brad Pitt...?

Who cares. Did he even finish high school?

Brad Pitt...?

Yeh, I think they need to chill out with the 'pick a child from every poor country' thing tho. It's not a competition!

Brad Pitt...?

No

Brad Pitt...?

awww come i do not get what u are trying to imply though he might be what u say he is though but i agreee with dr peas but hes a good guy though i mean he loves kids and as for that other ugly jen she deserved it and she needs a life

Brad Pitt...?

You are not making sense. Angelina Jolie is not what you call her to be.

Brad Pitt...?

ya for sure. brad pitt disgusts me now. i cannot stand him.

Brad Pitt...?

I know what you mean. Give it a few more years and he'll probably end up dating one of his adopted daughters like Woody Allen did.

Brad Pitt...?

No, you forgot Marla

Brad Pitt...?

definately

Brad Pitt...?

I'm going to kick tyler durden's @ss fightclub style!

Brad Pitt...?

I don't understand how any of those things relate to a mid-life crisis. Why do people think that all celebrities have to be one specific way? He is a human being with his own mind and interests and he can do whatever he wants. How is Angelina Jolie a sl ut exactly? I have never heard of her being with multiple men at one time. What is wrong with adopting children who need a home? I don't think Shiloh is a stupid name. What would you prefer? Something boring and cliche like Stephanie or Jennifer? Seems like people will find any excuse to hate when someone seems to be enjoying their life.

Brad Pitt...?

he should never have left jen

Brad Pitt...?

Actually...I think you could be right. After all he was pressuring Jen to have children. He said himself he was getting older and wanted to start a family. Jen said no not now, enter...mid-life crisis. Find a woman who has children, no wasted time there, make another within a year, crisis solved. I can't say much about the other stuff as he is only 43 and that's still young to me. If he were in his 50's or 60's I would question his intentions. Though I do think they are just wrong for adopting more children so quickly. They have barely had time to bond with the ones they have. I am hearing that Brad is getting stuck with a lot of babysitting duty. But he did after all make the fuss about having a family, now he has one.

Brad Pitt...?

I think the real Brad Pitt is coming out!

Brad Pitt...?

You can say that again! He should have stayed with Jennifer and adopted a child called 'Steve' or 'Lucy' ... he sure has rebelled at such an old age! I think the dominatrix sessions are starting to show!

What type of shirts and jeans would look the best on me?

I have a hard time finding clothes that look right. I am 5'7, big boned, I have a large bust and I wear a size 14 to 16 in pants. usually a xl in tops because of the bust. I try really hard to hide my stomach because i am embarrased by it. I have two kids, one a small infant so I have the lower belly pooch. My hair is blonde and shoulder length. Please help. I am tired of jogging pants!

What type of shirts and jeans would look the best on me?

I think high waisted boot cut jeans or straight jeans. Make sure you get a dark blue wash.

Black trousers/slacks from Express. Ask for a worker to help you get the right size and flattering fit.

Invest in a nice trenchcoat (check out victoria's secrets coats, they are gorgeous and come in nice colors, creme, red..etc)

victoriassecret.com

tops, i dont really know about this, I just know you should get something that hits your body right below the bust. That will make you look like you have an hour glass figure.

oh yeah, make sure if you get a buttoned up blouse, get a size larger, so the buttons close. Take it to a tailor and have them take in the sides for you. Usually they have tailors in any store (i know they do at nordstroms/department stores) It'll really be flattering

What type of shirts and jeans would look the best on me?

there are so any flattering figure clothe's at burlinton, and Ross dept. store's for you'r size and shape

What type of shirts and jeans would look the best on me?

what would look good on you is higher waisted straight leg jeans! the ones from old navy or the gap are awesome! and then a baby doll top that is round in the neck and low and is looser and flowy in the mid section!
